GENIUS, ALLEGEDLY.
KNOWN AS · Trench Smudge
“GLOWS. DOESN'T BEHAVE.”
He answers every question by talking about the weather over the Narrows first. The Narrows has a theory. The Narrows is wrong.
BEFORE THE LAB
He started by painting signs in the Narrows, where the corner boys run the weather report, and could never quite stop adding things the owners hadn't asked for. Street lamps flicker when he walks under them, as if checking whether they are still needed.
ASK HIM ANYTHING.
HE WILL TELL YOU ABOUT THE RAIN FIRST.
THE THING THAT CHANGED HIM
Asked, in front of half of the Narrows, whether he had been anywhere near the warehouse that night, he looked up and said it would rain by morning. It did. Nobody remembers the question being answered.

WHAT HE BECAME
In time he was known for a temper that has destroyed more canvases than any critic. Later, and less proudly, for paying rent in portraits, most of them unflattering. His studio door is open. Visitors leave with a portrait whether they wanted one or not.
Still active. Still unexplained. Still smiling about it.
