THE LAST MAN ON THE OLD FRONT.
KNOWN AS · Sergeant Shrapnel
“GLOWS. DOESN'T BEHAVE.”
In the Palace Quarter there are two versions of what Sergeant Shrapnel wanted. Both are wrong.
BEFORE THE LAB
He came up through the ranks the hard way, under banners nobody remembers raising, and kept every lesson. He has always burned a few degrees too bright; rooms get warmer when he is angry.

The military uniform.
One look, and everyone decides what he is. He has never corrected anyone.
THE THING THAT CHANGED HIM
A child in the Palace Quarter once asked him, loudly, in the middle of a market, what the military uniform meant. Every adult nearby stopped breathing. He crouched down and told the child something nobody else could hear.
WHAT HE BECAME
In time he was known for refusing every promotion offered after the war, for reasons he keeps to himself. Later, and less proudly, for telling the same war story every night — never the same way twice. He is technically on leave. He has been on leave for a very long time.
NOT ONE OF THEM IS TRUE.
EVERY STORY ABOUT HIM STARTS WITH THE MILITARY UNIFORM.
If you go to the Palace Quarter tonight, he will be there. He always is.
