He was found in a crater on the Outer Ring, glowing faintly and extremely annoyed. The Eagle is not his. He is the first in the Undercroft to say so, and the last to say whose.

The rest of the page is water damage. One passage is legible: a night porter in saw it first: dawn, a bench by the water, him cleaning the Eagle with a handkerchief as carefully as a watchmaker. It had not been used. He cleaned it anyway, then went to breakfast. Two words survive the redaction: and “again”.
