MAD LAD #1551 · LIGHT LAD

THE JOKE WENT TOO FAR. GOOD.

KNOWN AS · Uncle Riddle

“SHINY MENACE.”

Known in the Narrows for jokes that turn out, years later, to have been warnings. Remembered for something else.

THE FIRST RUMOR

Long before anyone wrote it down, the Narrows was already telling it. He grew up in the Narrows, where everyone owes everyone a small favour, where a good joke was worth more than rent — and sometimes was the rent.

HE HAS NEVER WAITED FOR THE RESULT.

HE HAS BET ON EVERY GAME OF CHESS IN THE NARROWS.

THE NIGHT IT HAPPENED

He once bet a stranger in the Narrows on a game of chess he was not even playing, and handed over the money before the first move. The stranger asked what he had bet on. He said it did not matter and sat down to watch.

“We've never charged him.”

“We've never been sure he was there.”

WHAT THEY SAY NOW

The old version remembers swapping every street sign in the Narrows in a single night. He is planning something. He is always planning something. The Narrows has learned to check its shoes.

THE LEGEND LEAVES ONE THING OUT.
